The Joy of Open-Air Theatre

Why is Open Air Family Theatre so popular!  We've been doing it for years! We know why!

Cambridge Touring Productions have been running Fun Family Theatre in the open Air for 23 years.  Started by Rosie Humphreys after a successful one-off performance of 'Wind in the Willows', she realised that this was the perfect way to entertain families in the summer months.

Rosie, theatre producer and director realised how easy it was for the parents to relax with their children outside. She says:

"Open Air Theatre is much more laid back than being indoors.  The atmosphere is inclusive and for all ages.

Normally we have children sitting at the front on blankets and cushions, riveted by what is going on.  We may have younger children enjoying sitting with the grown-ups but fascinated by the colour, the movement and music taking place.

"I laughed so much my socks fell off" (Megan, Aged 8)

"Who is making that dreadful racket" (Jeffrey Archer, Grantchester when we performed next to his garden!)

The theatre companies can be so funny.  Normally, they shout things out to the families and children and their parents alike are encouraged to shout back.

The actors will stick around after the show to have photos with children and their families."

Most of our venues are in ideal garden settings so there is lots of room for running around at the back or during the interval.  And most venues have tasty treats on sale including BBQs and ice creams.

The whole experience makes for a wonderful family day out.

This year, we are offering a couple of free family tickets if someone 'comments' on us on Facebook, and many families have had a great day out for free when they win. @Fun Family Theatre

Finally, we invite children (and their parents) to dress up as a character from the show.

It's all in good fun.

We are visiting beautiful sites all over the UK this summer with fabulous performances for families and young people. ‘Alice', 'Robin Hood', 'Hercules', 'The Ugly Duckling' and 'David Walliams Bad Dad' to name a few will take place in beautiful spots around the UK.  They are guaranteed to entertain and delight families in what promises to be a great summer’s day out. [1]
