Praying Mantis arrives in Stratford-upon-Avon from Europe!

A European Praying Mantis or Mantis religiosa which was discovered at Bordon Hill Nurseries in Stratford-upon-Avon, has been rehomed at Stratford Butterfly Farm. Named “Clare” after one of its workers, the Mantis was discovered two months ago and has been looked after by those that work there. With the weather getting colder, they decided she would be best looked after in the tropical conditions at Stratford Butterfly Farm and so has been rehomed.

The Mantis is not yet an adult and is probably in its 4th instar (the stages between moults) before it becomes an adult and gains its wings. It is currently being cared for behind the scenes but will be going on display to the public in MiniBeast Metropolis.

The European Mantis is a predatory insect in the family Mantidae. It has several adaptations for capturing and devouring its mainly insect prey. These include powerful mandibles (mouthparts) and long, spiked forelegs. It’s those forelegs that give the European Mantis the alternative name of ‘praying mantis’; while at rest the insect has an upright stance and holds its forelegs forwards as if praying. The European Mantis is a carnivore and preys mainly on insects, including crickets, grasshoppers, moths, butterflies, flies, and bees. The female European Mantis is heavier and larger than the male, reaching a maximum length of around 9cm compared to the male’s 7cm.

Jane Kendrick, Marketing Manager at Stratford Butterfly Farm said, “We are delighted to have rehomed Clare, a gorgeous young Praying Mantis which has probably had quite a journey as they are not native to the UK!”
