Author of ‘Rules for Vampires’ Alex Foulkes opens the new prep library at Denstone College

The pupils at the Prep at Denstone College were treated to a very special guest to launch their World Book Week with a bang…or a fang?!

Alex Foulkes, local author of Rules for Vampires, born and bred in Stoke-on-Trent. She spent much of her childhood reading in a school library, and then as an adult she ran a school library, so we thought there would be no better person to open one!

The Prep Library is a new dedicated space for the youngest members of the school. Dr Ireland, School Librarian, has carefully dressed the new shelves to showcase books and reading aimed at the prep school pupils.

As the library is an expansion of the main school library, this area represents another link between The Prep and the college, hereby ensuring our One School approach.

Each Prep pupil has a timetabled lesson in this fantastic new space each week, illustrating the importance we place on reading and how it is an essential part of the curriculum. There is also plenty of space to research projects for older children. The light and cosy environment enables them to immerse themselves in books, something we really value at the Prep.

Head Boy, Iliyin, and Head Girl, Pippa, were also present along with Mrs Davies, Head of Prep and Dr Ireland.

Denstone College is an independent school of more than 700 pupils aged 4-18. It has been educating boys and girls since 1873 and offers a truly all-round education. The high standard of pastoral and academic provision is remarkable, and this has been confirmed by recent Ofsted and ISI inspections. A2 results are usually in line with those of the very best schools nationally.

The latest investment in facilities at the College include the new prep school, The Prep at Denstone College (TPDC), which was opened in September 2021. This development represents £1.8 m of investment in our younger students, with £127k spent on the carefully designed playground areas, aiming to aid the physical development of the children and to include an element of adventure and independence.

With a dedicated, talented and inspiring staff, fantastic facilities and as impressive a rural setting as you could find, they balance the pursuit of academic excellence with a broad co-curricular programme. Denstone College offers students more than 40 sports and activities, some of which take place in the recently completed Adamson's Sports Complex, which includes a pavilion, astro turf, netball and tennis courts as well as rugby and cricket pitches. The College also has invested in further new cricket facilities which include a state-of-the-art all-weather facility and new nets.

The College offers opportunities for a range of co-curricular activities including outdoor pursuits, music and drama.
