How can photography and videography lessons benefit children?

Among UK schools surveyed, “nine in every 10 said they had cut back on lesson time, staff or facilities in at least one creative arts subject.” as reported by the BBC. This is especially unfortunate, as research has continuously demonstrated the benefits of creativity in schools. In addition to providing a well-rounded education, creative arts subjects can teach children how to better express themselves, problem-solve, and promote overall well-being. If you’ve considered enrolling your child in a programme outside of school, photography and videography lessons can be especially beneficial. Learn more about some of the top reasons to help your child learn these two valuable skills.

Enhances creativity
Although photography and videography may seem more skill-based and technical, these classes can do wonders for the development of creative skills. Although there are many equipment and technique skills that must be learned, everything else is based on perception and individual preferences. When children are given the task of capturing something in an image, or on video, they must first select what scenes and subjects interest them most. They must then decide how to best represent what they’ve chosen in an image or on film. This entire process, even when combined with the technical aspects of photography and videography, is wonderfully creative.

After capturing images and video, there are even more opportunities for self-expression. Once children are finished taking photos, they can create a photo collage to further show their perspective on people, places, animals, and objects. Having to decide how images are placed, and what other design elements can be incorporated, is a tremendous exercise of one’s creative skills, especially at such an early age. Additionally, video editing can be a major outlet for creativity and expression.

Fosters self-motivation and self-sufficiency
Learning how to capture exceptional images and video requires the practice of many skills that children have not yet developed. Two of these skills include self-motivation and self-sufficiency. Throughout childhood, one relies almost solely on parents, grandparents, teachers, and other adults to tell them what to do. They rely on these same individuals to complete complex tasks for them. By taking a photography and/or videography course, kids are pushed to care about producing quality work, and to achieve the results on their own. From setting up their equipment, to using their new skills to capture various scenes, to video editing, to printing out their best images, children quickly learn how to do many new tasks on their own.

Teaches both focus and patience
Both photography and videography require a high degree of patience, even for seasoned professionals. When your child is just beginning to learn how to take quality video and images, an even higher level of focus and patience are required. They will quickly see how challenging it can be to use cameras, position objects in the best manner, and to wait for the best moment to take video and images. As they work on honing their photography and videography skills in and out of class, they will continuously put their focus and patience to the test.

Although there are many quality creative classes that children can take, photography and videography offer a special set of skills that are incredibly beneficial. If you want to enhance your child’s ability to learn new technical skills, while developing his or her creativity, focus, patience, self-motivation, and self-sufficiency, a course in one (or both) subjects is an excellent decision.
