Fife schools come together to celebrate National Walking Month

Pupils from across Fife have been heading to their local parks to get active and celebrate all things that are great about walking for Living Streets’ National Walking Month.

A number Fife schools have joined together in their local parks for a series of fun activities and to celebrate being active, the last of these events will take place at Letham Glen (16 May). The schools that have been invited all take part in WOW – the year-round walk to school challenge from Living Streets.

WOW rewards children who walk to school at least once a week with collectable badges and has been show to increase the number of children walking to school by 23 per cent on average. Pupils and teachers from the Fife schools have been working hard to increase active travel rates and have made a real effort to increase the number of children walking to school.

The pupils will be taking part in a range of activities including fun with award-winning children’s entertainer Jamie the Jester, games sessions, den building, face painting, poster design, dancing and lots more. The activities have been chosen to highlight the active fun children can have outdoors.

Fife Council has been delivering the WOW celebration events for three years in partnership with Living Streets, as a celebration of Fife’s commitment to making the school journey an active one.

Fife schools are part of a collective of 220 schools from across Scotland who are taking part in WOW - the year-round walk to school challenge and helping make Scotland a walking nation.

Councillor Altany Craik, Convener – Economy Tourism, Strategic Planning & Transportation Committee Fife Council said: “Fife Schools have been taking part in the year-round walk to school challenge for the past couple of years and we have seen some great achievements from those involved. Last year one of Fife Schools received the title for most actively travelled in Scotland for Easter, this was then repeated by another Fife school who was awarded most actively travelled in Scotland for the festive period.

“It is fantastic to see such results and increases in active travel to school through the hard work of everyone involved. I hope the pupils enjoy the events and it encourages them to keep up the excellent work.”

Rebecca Simpson, Project Manager, Living Streets Scotland said: “We love working with Fife Council on their WOW park events. As a local authority they are dedicated to making the school journey an active one, and we support them to make this happen.

“This National Walking Month, we want to get the whole of Scotland taking to their feet and celebrating the benefits of moving more. These schools are a fantastic example of what can be achieved from small steps.”
