Is This a Dagger? Primary Times Children's Choice Awards Review Edinburgh Fringe

'You do know this story is violent, bloody and miserable? - Good', proclaims the talented Andy Cannon, transforming this compelling tale of treachery and death into an accessible, humorous and commanding one-man performance. His passion for ‘the Scottish Play’ is evident throughout. By turn dark, spooky and funny this clever adaptation has the audience captivated throughout.

A pair of glasses and Cannon becomes a witch, a headscarf and he is Lady MacBeth – each character is inhabited with ease and his spellbinding performance is a joy to watch. Thunder crashes and witches cackle as the Thane of Glamis morphs into the murderous King of Scotland. The humour is constant despite the throat slitting and the laughter sits comfortably alongside the ruthless ambition and greed of the Macbeths.

The lighting and sound effects are powerful although Cannon is hard working and uses minimal props. Perfectly pitched at age 8+ this superb tragicomedy is an excellent introduction for older children to 'grown up' theatre. A reverent tribute to the Bard, this is a memorable performance by an outstanding storyteller.

Child's Quote

Jake (11) loved the part 'when the witches spoke to Macbeth and when the guards were being silly as they watched over King Duncan'. Anna (9) preferred 'the battle scenes and the clip clopping of the horse' Although on reflection they both said their favourite part was 'all of it'!
