&Juliet

Joyous is the only word I can think of to sum up &Juliet. It’s a musical based on the songs penned by Max Martin – who knew that he wrote so many hits (more than 75 top ten hits)? Some musicals feel like they’re contrived to fit round the hits. Not this one. The action flows along. The dialogue’s witty and sometimes downright funny. Above all, the singing and dancing are energetic and exciting. The audience, who the night we were there were very enthusiastic, are truly part of the experience. You’ll go out into the night just thinking Wow!

It’s hard to sum up the plot without giving too much away. Actually it’s hard to sum up the plot full stop! The starting point is the end of the Shakespeare play but Juliet survives but if you don’t enjoy Shakespeare (or if you do), don’t let that put you off. Very soon, the action is careering off from fair Verona in the general direction of Paris and beyond. Juliet is taking control of her own destiny and there are to be no more unhappy endings. The cast is diverse and the play is life affirming. Juliet herself, Miriam-Teak Lee, is excellent.

&Juliet is at the Shaftesbury Theatre and booking through to next June. It’s recommended for ages 12 and over but to be honest there were slightly younger children there the night we were having a great time.
