Daredevils needed for Rainbows challenge

Derbyshire daredevils with a head for heights can sign up to our new challenge – one of the few events we will stage this year.

The ever popular Derby Cathedral Abseil - which involves climbing 189 steps before abseiling down the 212ft tower - will take place on Saturday 3 October between 9am and 5.30pm.

In a difficult fundraising year for us, we have struggled to stage our usual events across the East Midlands.

Rainbows event organiser Paula North said: “Like for all charities, 2020 has been difficult for Rainbows to fundraise and we are set to face loses of up to £1million. We are so pleased that we are able to hold the Derby Cathedral Abseil as it is such a popular event of ours.

“We have taken necessary steps to make sure that this event is able to take place in a Covid-safe way. As such, along with social distancing being implemented, there will be a strict one-way system in place on the day, with hand sanitising stations available at registration, before you abseil and when you finish. There will also be minimal contact from the instructors, who'll be wearing face coverings during any harnessing and testing of equipment.

“We look forward to people signing up to the event and supporting our hospice. We rely on our fundraisers to help us keep our doors open and provide the vital care we do to hundreds of children and young people who need us the most.”

Entry is £20 and we are encouraging participants to raise sponsorship money. Children must be over 11 to take part. To get involved, contact Paula on 01509 638039, email paula.north@rainbows.co.uk or visit rainbows.co.uk/abseil2020
