It is over 250 years since the circus as we know it was invented by Philip Astley. Neil Calladine looks at Astley’s life and the history of the circus in Belper. Neil looks back at circus-type performances in Derby by the late 1700s and in Belper from 1841, but there were circus-type performances at Belper Fair before that.
