Lambing at Green Dragon Eco Farm 2019

Green Dragon’s rare breed lambs come in all shapes and sizes!

At Green Dragon lambing time comes twice a year – Spring and Christmas time - but the majority of the flock lambs in the Spring. The pregnant sheep were scanned at the end of December last year when each ewe was marked with a dot per lamb which means the 30 ewes will be producing 50 lambs or more!

The primitive breeds, such as the Soay and Portland breeds, have the least problem lambing as they produce small lambs and are very hardy. Normally lambs come in twos but, occasionally, there are triplets born, one of which is often rejected by its mum. These few become our ‘orphan lambs’ which need to be bottle-fed – a very popular activity with visitors!

Two of the Green Dragon rare sheep breeds produce young at Christmas time – the Dorset and Portland breeds. These breeds are able to breed at any time of year. This helps reduce numbers of lambing sheep during the Spring and also because it is always nice to have some lambs at Christmas-time!

A member of the Rare Breed Survival Trust (RPST), Green Dragon Eco Farm contributes to the promotion and increase in population of UK rare breeds. Many of their ewes are bred using registered rare breed animals to ensure they have healthy and pure-bred lambs.

Visit during lambing-time and you may see a lamb being born! Normal farm hours and admission prices apply.
